Thoughts of a Princess

Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy...the band that I never knew I always liked.

My relationship with Fall Out Boy starts with hate. I didn't know who they were or what was so special about this new song called "Sugar, We're Going Down." All I knew is that that song was on every single time I got in the car...and it was getting on my nerves. I didn't even stick around to listen to it. I wanted to listen to something I knew and all that was on was Fall Out Boy.

Then one day...I heard it. On the radio, on TV, in passing...I don't remember. Then I heard it again...and again...and again. And suddenly whenever I heard those first familiar cords I would turn it up and sing along with the chorus that I could barely understand. It was one of those songs that everytime I heard it I knew that I would get sick of it one day, but I was going to enjoy the fact that I liked a song that was always on the radio.

Just as I was starting to get sick of "Sugar," I heard "Dance, Dance" on One Tree Hill and had to have that song. I liked it so much better than "Sugar." I didn't hear it as much, but I had in my iPod so I could listen to it whenever I wanted to.

I eventually grew sick of that song as well...a lot quicker than I expected to actually. So I thought, there it was...the end of my Fall Out Boy obsession. And then something unexpected happened.

One Tree Hill created a midseason wrap up montage using "Sugar" as their song of choice. It was one of those great times when a song and a visual come together to create something even better...it enhances both. It wasn't as good as some of the others I have seen, but it was still great.

This didn't mean that much to me until I started hearing the song on the radio again. Apparently everyone else still couldn't stop listening to it. And everytime I heard the song I could imagine the scenes it was paired with on the show. That aggressive, angry chorus paired with the aggressive, angry fight during the basketball game made the song sound even angrier.

And from then on I had to listen to the song everytime it was on. I turned it up and sang along at the top of my lungs. I don't even think I downloaded it. It comes on the radio that much that I don't need to.

But even when it starts to fade from radio playlists (if it ever does) and Fall Out Boy either trancends their first big hit or fades into the music graveyard, "Sugar" will remain one of those magic songs that I will always listen to no matter how long it has been.
